Re-launched last month, De Vos café as the name suggests is located on De Vos avenue along Duplication road and is a cozy café and coffee shop. Back with a bang complete with new owner, new menu and a new take on things.

Avocado on Toast - Pix by M.D. Nissanka

The setup

Comprising two parts – café and dining area furnished as expected with couches and dining tables they also feature an outdoor area with cast iron furnishings. Touching on the Lankan aspect of things they managed to integrate historical Sri Lankan paintings and ornaments.

What’s new on the menu

New simplified menu that’s only one page, yes you heard it right. The menu being carefully selected to offer something for everyone. Comprising mains, sandwiches, salads, an all-day breakfast and ofcourse cakes and bakes.
Things to try -

Avocado on Toast

To start things off we went for the avocado on toast. We got two decent sized avocado toasts with around 6 pieces of crispy pita bread and what seemed to be something like a tomato salsa. The avocado topping was great with a highlight on the sourdough bread. Perfect toast, crispy on the out and tender in the middle. We later learned that De Vos café has a fully-fledged bakery too.

French Dip Sandwich

Moving forward we had to try the French dip sandwich. The sandwich is around 6 inches and filled with beef, a slice of cheese, onions, a side of fries, the dip and ketchup. Good amount of meat well roasted and once again the house made baguette really shines. A café doing their breads in house is indeed a rare occurrence in our parts and is great to note that they do that well. Dipping the sandwich brought out more intense beef flavors and livened up the sandwich, being a tad bit salty on our take the baguette was able to absorb enough of the dip without getting soggy.

French Dip Sandwich

Still hungry, we sampled the naked chicken penne alfredo taco. Yes, it’s a mouthful and you will be wanting to have your mouth full of this once you try it. The “taco” being a seasoned, flatted and fried chicken fillet almost like a chicken schnitzel. Crispy outer, well-seasoned, tender and juicy on the inside. The penne alfredo, fabulous. Combined this certainly delivers a treat for the palate.

Fish and chips

Finally, we had to try the fish and chips. The highlight being on the fact that their chips are made of ash plantain which got our curiosity levels up. We got three medium sized pieces of evenly battered fish, the side of ash plantain chips and house made tartar sauce. We really enjoyed the fish which had a great crust and seasoned batter. The ash plantain chips were superb. If you have never eaten ash plantain chips you are missing out. This is a great take on the new trend being sweet potato fries and we do see this being a thing in the future. Not forgetting the house made tartar sauce followed through as well.

Choc Croc aka Chocolate Kimbula bun

For dessert, we got their signature “Choc Croc”, which is in essence a Chocolate kimbula bun infused with Nutella.

The Coffee

De Vos café prides themselves on serving up local coffee and currently offer soul coffee and harischandra coffee. Going for the good old cappuccino with soul coffee, we got ours with a double shot espresso. The coffee was bold but light to medium in flavor and not overpowering, the milk well textured. We also got a free cookie with the coffee which is great. We’d like to hope other coffee shops take note because who doesn’t like cookies?

To end it all, we got their signature coffee which they call Colombo’s Blackest Coffee AKA CBC. Comprising of a blend of soul coffee and harischandra topped off with their signature black whipped cream which is coconut charcoal mixed with whipped cream, Lankan spices and coffee. Tasting it, we were reminded of a sort of masala chai meets coffee and leaves your mouth looking like you’ve gobbled down a can of motor oil. Word on the street is it has gathered up a cult following and even gotten celebrity backing from the likes of Stigmata.

They also offer up a variety of other drinks including house specialty drinks, juices and shakes and bottled coconut water.

Conclusion

Being pleasantly surprised with the level of service, style of operation, putting unique twists on timeless classics and a strong emphasis on being local, De Vos Café is one spot to look out for as they strive to shine in Colombo’s ever populating café scene. Be sure to watch this space for a follow up review in the coming months.
