Taking the ramp as a designer at the Colombo Fashion Week at its inception, Sonali White de Silva made her mark with her designer clothing label HADDAI. In the years that followed, her brand became a favourite among local fashionistas.

Longer, more voluminous look

Sonali gains fashion inspiration from ‘art in all forms,’ and focuses on using her skills as a designer and also as a professional in hair and make-up to give her clients the best. Noticing the problems of hair fall, genetic baldness, and damaged hair conditions faced by many, Sonali ventured into hair makeovers as solution for hair problems with HADDAI Hair & Beauty.

Using hair extensions for fashion was still in its infancy in Sri Lanka when Sonali experimented with natural human hair extensions to create new looks of lengthy, voluminous hair. She now has a regular flow of clients seeking to enhance their natural locks!

Apart from fashionable hair makeovers, Sonali provides hair extension and wig solutions for medical hair fall causes of baldness, hair thinning, hair loss, alopecia, head surgery, scars and hair loss due to chemotherapy.

“Adding on hair makes a huge difference to the appearance of a person,” Sonali says. As she states women are more conscious of their hair and concerned about hair colour, texture and length. “Hair has a lot to do with confidence; it is, after all, considered a woman’s crowning glory.”

“Clients with medical hair issues are the most sensitive about their hair,” Sonali says adding that their emotional reactions before and after their hair makeovers highlight this aspect.

With HADDAI Hair & Beauty, patients who suffer hair loss due to medical conditions including chemotherapy are given a 10% discount off the price of hair extensions or wigs with free consultations, hair fixing, styling, and conditioning paired with six month maintenance treatments.

Brazilian, Malaysian, Indian and Peruvian hair is used for wigs and hair extensions with assured safety of the scalp and re-growth of natural hair. Sonali explains the difference between artificial hair and human hair as when burnt the former turns into plastic substance and the latter becomes ashes.

Hair extensions can be formed in lengths from 16 to 32 inches and come in all types of hair — wave, loose wave, straight, curly and kinky.

Attached hair pieces can be permed, straightened, cut and styled and come in colour range of blue, green, burgundy, pink, violet, red, shades of brown and blonde.

“We use three safe methods of clip on, tape and bead to attach extensions to hair,” Sonali says. The special lace wig is particularly popular among men and women due to its durability, comfort and for the healthy re-growth of natural hair.

As Sonali states, women who undergo chemotherapy are devastated when they come for hair makeovers thinking that their hair will never grow back. They are reluctant to go out of the house, and even feel anxious about facing their families. “The first thing they do, as soon as the wig is fixed, is comb the hair and feel its texture,” Sonali says, relating how much they enjoy the feel of hair.

Wigs are carefully measured, matched according to the texture of the client’s natural hair and completed within ten days.

Sonali believes that every woman who faces untimely hair loss enjoys new confidence with the addition of new hair.

But hair is not her only focus these days – Sonali’s new clothing collection of stylish evening wear will be launched at the end of November.
