By 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 8, Flower Road was filling up and by 2 p.m. all was in place.

“Route 66” – as the Ladies’ College Walk 2018 was dubbed was set to take off and notwithstanding the scorching afternoon heat, there was a carnival atmosphere as generations of LCites past and present joined hands to support their school.

The Walk was being held as a fundraiser for the proposed Performing Arts Complex that is to be built for Ladies’ College and was organised by the school together with the Parent Teacher Association of Ladies’ College (LC PTA) and the Old Girls’ Association of Ladies’ College (LC OGA).

So why Route 66? That, older readers may recall was Nat King Cole’s famous song as well as the name of one of the most famous roads in the USA – just like LC’s address ‘No 66’, Sir Ernest de Silva Mawatha (Flower Rd) “Route 66” is an integral part of the lives of students of Ladies’ College.

And so clad in red and white Route 66 t’shirts they marched, with old crocks, double decker buses, cyclists adding to the fun.
