Two volunteers attached to a landmine clearing agency died in an explosion on a clearing site in the North this week.

One of the victims died on the spot while engaged in clearing landmines near Mankulam on Monday, while the other victim succumbed to his injuries two days later in the Vavuniya hospital.

The victims were identified as 28-year-old Rajendran Nitharsan from Omanthai, Vavuniya, and Pathmanathan Thileepan from Kilinochchi. The tragic death of the two volunteers, who were soon to become fathers, shattered those who knew them in their respective villages. The grieving pregnant wife of the second victim had tried to commit suicide but was prevented by family members.
