JICA hands over Greater Kandy Urban Plan to Minister

The recommendations of the “Greater Kandy Urban Plan’’ were handed over to Minister of Megapolis Patali Champika Ranawaka by the Japanese Ambassador Kenichi Suganuma.

Speaking at a seminar held in conjunction with the handing over ceremony, Dr (Ms) Lalitha Dissanayake, -Senior Lecturer of the Department of Geography, University of Peradeniya- said originally the landscape in Kandy consisted of of forest cover and marsh-land. It also had a number of natural streams and a numerous road corridors.

She added development of the town had led to many environmental issues and the land area was now under stress.

She emphasisd the team from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has identified the problems and designed a plan to develop the city in an environmentally favourable manner.

Among those present were, UDA Chairman, Dr Jagath Munasinghe; JICA Advisor, Professor Monte Cassim; Professor Shirou Wakaii, Director UDA Central Province, N.A.S.N Nissanka, and UDA Deputy Director H.W. Somaratne.
