The Eastern University administration shut down the Faculty of Healthcare Sciences following serious ragging incidents, and will remain closed for more than two weeks.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. T. Jayasingam told the Sunday Times that the incidents had gone beyond the control of the administration hence, the immediate step to shut down the Faculty. “The students complained to us directly. This is not something they do often for various reasons,” Prof. Jayasingam said.

He also said that the levels of ragging varied, going as far as sexual and mental torture. An area correspondent said the administration had decided to hold a meeting with the students and Lecturers to discuss how to put a stop to the ragging menace.

Prof. Jayasingam said the other Faculties hadn’t yet re-opened and it is likely that ragging may occur there too, once they do.  - Abdullah Shahnawaz
