Police raid unlicenced sand storage site

A sand storage site that was operating without a licence was raided in the Suduwella area of Madampe, Police said.

A large stock of sand pending sale

They said sand that was transported to this area, washed and stored in preparation for sale.

At the time of the raid a large stock of sand was found, ready for sale, although the owners did not possess a valid licence.They had a previous licence issued by the Geological Surveys and Mines Bureau.

An engineer of the North Western Province Geological Surveys and Mines Bureau, Wasantha Wimalaratna said that after the previous licence had expired, the owners had sought an extension, but it had not been granted by the time of the raid.

Puttalam’s Deputy Inpsector General of Police, Champika Siriwardena said they had called for an explanation from the Bureau.
