A stool to swear upon

View(s):

An ancient custom of our judicial system during the time of kings was that an accused should prove his or her innocence by swearing at a Buddhist temple or a devalaya. To that end, there was special equipment in those places. At the Kataragama Maha Devalaya, too, this ritual was observed, and there was a special stool made of stone called the Divurum Gala. The Divurum Gala is not used now but a devotee visiting Kataragama Maha Devalaya can see this interesting artefact near the Vahal Kada on entering the Maha Devalaya.
