A majority of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) members in the newly elected Anamaduwa Pradeshiya Sabha (PS), boycotted the installation of one of their members as Chairman.

SLPP member Priyantha Rajakaruna was elected Chairman earlier this week. He is a teacher by profession and one time secretary to late Minister D.M.Dassanayake.
Although the Council had an SLPP majority, it failed to elect its Chairman for some time.

Although 17 SLPP members were elected, only four participated at the inauguration ceremony. 31 members were elected to the new PS, with eight members from the UNP, four from the SLFP and one each from the JVP and an Independent group.

Commenting on the absence of the former Chairman of the council from the UPFA, Udara Madushanka said this new Chairman’s appointment had been made on the recommendations of MP Sanath Nishantha and they were reluctant to cooperate with him.
