4,000 Sports Instructors to uplift school sports: Education Ministry

View(s):

The Ministry of Education (MoE) is to recruit some 4,000 Sports Instructors (SI) to improve Sports activities in schools and produce more national level Sports-persons.  The MoE has received more than 17,000 applications for the positions with interviews already in progress.

Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said recruitment will be carried out as a different service and the SIs will be able to rise through 3 Grades to Chief SI. Under the proposal, 80% recruited will be males, considering their work schedules, as they will be expected to work even during holidays.

“They will be mostly in the field, instead of in classrooms,” he said. Preference will be given to those who have attained National level or, excelled in major Sports events. The SI will undergo 3 months training, so that, in addition to their main Sport, they will be able to train students in other selected Sports as well.

“This will support the concept that all students should take part in at least one Sport,” he added. He said this is the first time a separate service is being set up to improve the Sports skills of students.
