Sri Lankan officials at tourism seminar in China

The Ministry of Commerce and the People’s Republic of China in collaboration with the Economic & Commercial Counsellor’s Office of the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka recently conducted a seminar on “Tourism Administration for ASEAN countries” at the Yunnan International Centre in Yunnan, China.

The participants were the senior government officials from ASEAN countries but also included representatives from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Deputy Minister of Parliamentary Reforms and Mass Media, Karunarathna Paranawithana, part of the Sri Lankan delegation, made a speech on Sri Lanka’s potential in agriculture and tourism and highlighted the investment opportunities available in Sri Lanka, according to an official media release.

According to the President of Chamber of Tourism & Industry, A.M. Jaufer, it was a very useful seminar with valuable learnings. He says that the way that the Chinese authorities have developed their natural tourist attractions such as mountains, parks, lakes and lagoons to such high standard is very commendable, generating a lot of income to the local community.

Sri Lankan participants were afforded the opportunity to visit several important places such as the Yunnan Provincial Tourism Development Commission, Li Jiang Tourism Association and China Power Company in Kunming, Yunnan and exchange views with local officials on how they can assist the tourism industry in Sri Lanka.

Mr. Jaufer said he made a country presentation highlighted the special tourist attractions available in Sri Lanka and indicated that among all other Asian countries, Sri Lanka is one country where one could experience three different climatic conditions within a matter of a few hours of travel.
