Park Street Mews, the city’s most iconic street for food, retail and fashion, was recently lit up in grandeur and style to celebrate the start of the festive season.   Frederick-James Koch, the  Australian born Sri Lankan actor and entertainer, kicked off the celebrations with the lighting of  the Mews’ traditional  Christmas tree.  The light-up was held for the second consecutive year. The evening of entertainment and festivities continued with performances by Sri Lankan artiste Tanuja Perera, whose soulful renditions of classical carols and holiday songs set the mood for the evening .

Tanuja is a vocally powerful soul and jazz singer from the U.K. She moved to Sri Lanka 2 years ago and since moving here formed her acoustic band ‘The Back Up Plan’ consisting of Marlon Herbert on Cajun, Shenal Perera on bass and Greg Pallegama on guitar.

Tanuja started as a singer in church before going onto being in a duo called Taraka with her sister and traveling and performing around the world. Like Tanuja, the members of  ‘The Back Up Plan’ also come from a church background.

The band plays  a combination of classic and contemporary soul jazz and r ‘n b and perform predominantly in the event circuit but occasionally do public appearances such as The Mews light up.

Commenting on this year’s light-up, Tasneem Moosajee, Developer of Park Street Mews stated: “We are delighted to continue our time-honoured tradition of lighting up Park Street Mews for the holiday season. I’d like to thank everyone who made this event a success and take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt best wishes to our patrons and guests this Christmas and New year .
