Western Province and Central Province emerged champions in Men and Women categories respectively at the Chess Tournaments of the 42nd National Sports Festival, which concluded at the Sports Ministry premises in Torrington yesterday. Central Province emerged runners-up in the Men’s category ahead of Southern Province while Western Province secured the runner-up position in Women’s with North Western Province finishing off at third.  Chandana Wijekoon representing Western Province was adjudged the best player in the Men’s category while Dinukshi Premanath of Central Province was named the best Women’s player. Eastern and Uva provinces did not take part in the tournament, making the inaugural chess tournament a battle among seven provinces.  - SP
