Tiran Alles indicted for misappropriating Rs 167 million

Businessman and former MP Tiran Alles has been ordered to appear in the Colombo High Court on August 24, to answer charges of misappropriating Rs 167 million.

The order issued by Judge Kusala Sarojini Weerawardhana includes three others- Tiger guerrilla fund raiser Emil Kanthan, Rohana Saliya Abeysinghe Weerawickremesuriya and Jayantha Dias Samarasinghe.

In terms of the indictment, the funds were for building a housing complex for the 2004 tsunami victims.

The four have been charged under the Public Property Act, both for alleged misappropriation and breach of trust. The moneys had allegedly been misappropriated from the State-backed Reconstruction and Development Agency (RADA).

The moneys were meant for the construction of 800 housing units in Trincomalee and Batticaloa, under a project titled Jayalanka.

The Attorney General’s Dept has directed the release of four others who have been in custody in this case. They are Shanthi Kumar Gajan Kumar, Anand Shanthi Kumar, Kandasami Sodiraja and Ponmudi Sri Hara Suthan.
