A 14-year-old student got electrocuted in Dompe, when the kite he was flying with copper fibre mixed string came into contact with a high voltage electrical cable, a coroner’s court inquiry was told this week.

The victim, Nethmal Perera, was a Grade 9 student.

Father of the child, Sampath Perera, a soldier attached to the Homagama camp, said his son had accompanied a friend to a nearby paddy field to fly the kite. “His friend had handed over the kite to him and gone for a drink of water, when the kit connected with a high voltage electrical cable,” he added.

Police investigations revealed the kite string had copper fibre, resulting in the electrocution of the boy.

Inquirer into Sudden Deaths Ashroff Rumi held death was due to electrocution.
