What looked like a one-horse-race for 14 weeks has now turned out to a crucial battle between two keen contestants. But there can only be one eventual winner. After taking the lead last weekend, Yohan Mendis of S. Thomas’ College is trying to cement his stronghold but he only has a marginal lead in the 16th week of the 37th Bata-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2016 competition. Yohan added 1401 votes during the ended week, taking his total count to 15306 from 13905.

Meanwhile Pawan Dias collected a further 2605votes, to show a marked improvement from last week’s 1942. Pawan, of Royal College Panadura, lost his crown after leading the contest for 14 straight weeks and he gets only a short phase of two more weekends before the curtain comes down. Pawan gathered 737 votes during the ended week as his tally moves to 12701 and remains at second for a second week running. Lahiru Thambawita of Holy Cross College Kalutara remains at third place.

Madawa Fernando of De La Salle College Mutwal continues to lead the Emerging Schools category for the 16th week, unchallenged. Dilshan Madushanka of Siri Piyarathana Central Padukka remains at second.  Coupons of the 37th Bata-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2016 will appear on Wijeya Newspaper’s dailies, the Daily Mirror and Lankadeepa and also its weekend English issue, the Sunday Times and the Sinhala weekly Deshaya.
