The government is considering a levy on all vehicles entering the city of Colombo to ease traffic congestion and encourage car owners to use public transportation, official sources revealed.

The Treasury is looking at the possibility of including such a levy in the 2016 budget as traffic congestion in Colombo has reached uncontrollable levels with around 500,000 vehicles entering the city daily.

It is proposed to establish special ticket counters at vehicle entering points of Galle Road, Kandy Road and Negombo Road. The vehicle owners are required to keep the receipt until they leave the city of Colombo, informed sources said.

This proposal was submitted by the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) to tackle the traffic congestion in the city of Colombo and to increase the CMC revenue.
