CB re-employs old staffers as consultants

The under-fire Central Bank (CB) getting flak for its recent exodus of staff transfers has drawn new attention by employing five CB retirees as consultants, informed sources said.

They include former CB Director Supervision, Joan de Silva Moonasinghe and former Director Legal Sarojini Kadurugamuwa, they said.
This has come on the back of the CB transferring some 200 staff members for which it drew immense criticism that part of it was a politically motivated move after the infamous bond deal implicating CB Governor Arjuna Mahendran and his son-in-law, Arjun Aloysius. Mr. Aloysius’s family firm Perpetual Treasuries was the main beneficiary when the bond was raised to Rs. 10 billion from Rs. 1 billion by the CB.

The CB has since then tried to ‘fix’ this situation through a few more transfers (about 5) sending officers closer to their homes but this has done nothing to mend staff sentiment. According to the sources, some of the transfers in late September were of officials the Governor had an issue with in terms of trust, which is contrary to his pronouncements when he was appointed that the CB has an excellent staff which has not been given their due place due to politics.
