Schoolboy run over and killed by lorry

A grade 10 student was run over and killed by a lorry, while returning from school with two friends on a motor bike in the Pannala area in Kurunegala on Tuesday.

The victim Sajith Prasanna Dilshan, 15, resided on Karavita Road Iriyagolla and was studying at Iriyagolla Maha Vidyalaya.
Giving evidence before the Inquirer into sudden deaths M. Ashroff Rumi, the mother of the victim Nimanthi Kumari, said the victim was her eldest son “My son was sitting behind. While they were travelling a lorry struck the bike from behind and my son had fallen on to the road.” Ms. Kumari said.

Her son was then run over by the lorry. He was rushed to Kuliyapitiya Hospital immediately and transferred to the National Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries the following morning.

The Pannala Police said the lorry driver and the motor bike rider were remanded following the incident. Mr. Rumi ordered the police to produce the two in the Coroners Court on November 12.

National Hospital’s Judicial Medical Officer K. K. Joozar said death was caused by injuries to the skull. He concluded it was an accidental death.
