Seven soldiers were arrested at Kaithady in Chavakachcheri while they were allegedly removing iron frames supporting billboards on the A9 road, police said yesterday. Deputy Inspector General G.K. Perera told the Sunday Times that the soldiers were in civvies when they were arrested on Friday night by Chavakachcheri policemen on night patrol.

He said the Police had received complaints that iron frames from large advertising hoardings had gone missing and had later been traced at scrap iron shops in Jaffna. The soldiers were released on bail. The magistrate ordered them to be present in court on October 26.
