Although October 1 this year dawned as usual, with much hype by the media, no number of shows or carnivals for children could dispel the thick gloom and uncertainty: what is happening to our children?

In every aspect children today seem to be in peril. In many instances adults, perverts such as paedophiles and negligent parents, are directly to be blamed. But when it’s not the lives of children that are in danger, it’s their future. Today, proper education is sadly not an undisputed right anymore, whatever politicians may say: many schools lack teachers, or buildings, or both.

For many months there has been a dire shortage of teachers in their area, Serunuwara in Trincomalee. Sadly, even the vicissitudes of nature seem to hit the children the hardest. Some of our photos show how their education, and consequently the future of the country, has been disrupted following the floods and other natural disasters.
