Constitutional Council receives over 500 nominees for Independent Commissions

The Constitutional Council (CC) has received names of over 500 nominees from professional bodies to be considered for appointment to the 10 Independent Commissions set up under the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.

The CC had written to professional bodies including the Organisation for Professional Association (OPA) requesting for names to be forwarded to the Council, for its consideration, for such appointments.

The CC has to appoint members to the Election Commission, Public Service Commission, National Police Commission, Audit Service Commission, Human Rights Commission, Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, Finance Commission, Delimitation Commission, National Procurement Commission and the University Grants Commission.

The CC will convene on October 9 when it is expected finalise some of these appointments.

The Members of the Council include Prime Minister Ranil Wickemesinghe, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya and Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan who are ex-officio, while the others are Ministers Patali Champika Ranawaka, Wijayadasa Rajapaksha P.C., JVP MP Vijitha Herath as well as the three Civil Society representatives, Dr A.T. Aiyarathne, Dr Radhika Coomaraswamy and Shibly Aziz P.C.
