The Postal Dept is recruiting retired Post Masters residing in Colombo to clear an unexpected volume of mail reaching the Central Mail Exchange (CME) daily due to public exams, university entrance and school admissions, a senior official said.

Post Master General Rohana Abeyratna told the Sunday Times, “Last week we had a huge amount of mail stuck at the CME due to insufficient staff. Hence, we have asked retired Post Masters residing in Colombo to assist us.”

He said that an estimated 100,000 mail articles were reaching the CME on a daily basis, prompting them to find a way to clear them.
He said post offices islandwide have been directed to dispatch mail directly to the respective post offices without sending them to the CME.He said among the mail items were Grade 1 Applications, Admission Cards for GCE A/L Exam and University entrance Applications for next year’s intake, to the University Grant Commission.

The volume of mail is set to increase in the next few weeks in view of election propaganda material being circulated.
