The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) this week implemented a significant increase in its daily, monthly and annual entry permit fees, effective Wednesday (1). The changes included a Rs 2,250 increase in the annual Individual Pass rates and a Rs 425 increase in the monthly Individual Pass rates, while the daily fees increased by Rs 15.

Motorcycle Pass rates increased by Rs 4,700, Rs 750 and Rs 25 for annual, monthly and daily respectively. Light vehicle Pass rates increased by Rs 7,200, Rs 1,000 and Rs 50, for annual, monthly and daily respectively. Heavy vehicle Pass rates increased by Rs 11,700, Rs 1,200 and Rs 75 for annual, monthly and daily respectively.

The revised figures did not include the Value Added Tax (VAT) and Nation Building Tax (NBT) which were to be added to the revised prices. The SLPA notice took all freight forwarding agents by surprise, an agent told the Sunday Times.
However, an SLPA official claimed that its entry permit rates had not been revised for the past 25 years, which factor had been taken into consideration before the revisions were made.
