The Sri Lanka Shippers’ Council (SLCS) has expressed concern over the sudden resignation of the Director General of Sri Lanka Customs Jagath P. Wijeweera this week.

Mr. Wijeweera has said he resigned for personal reasons but questions are being raised in industry circles as to whether there was political pressure to quit.

“Mr. Wijeweera has been one of the few director generals of Customs who initiated a hands-on approach in solving importers and exporters’ issues spontaneously. He was also spearheading the Customs initiatives on e-Commerce and rendered an enormous service by providing leadership to his team and adopting the balance approach with all stakeholders,” the SLCS said in a media statement.

“We appreciate the efforts of Mr. Wijeweera and acknowledge his straightforwardness, honestly and transparency when dealing with SLSC and its associate members. We urge the authorities to ensure the good work commenced by the Customs will continue in order the trade and related services would benefit,” the council said.
