Lanka Sepaktakraw Championships which will draw to a close at the St. Joseph’s College auditorium in Colombo today. Matches are scheduled to be played from 8 am onwards.

In the women’s section India and Pakistan look set to meet in the finals when the round-robin part of the tournament drew to a close last night.
A tall order awaits the India and Pakistan teams as immediately after the championships they are scheduled to fly to Thailand today to take part in the Kings Cup Sepaktakraw Championships in Bangkok.

In the men’s tournament Pakistan won all their matches in Group B while the team from Kotikawatte too turned in a fine performance in acrobatic skills to win the three matches they had played at the time of going to press. From Group A Malay CC were in outstanding form having won all the games that they had played.

Altogether 13 men’s teams took part in the round-robin format of the contest while seven teams are in the running for the women’s competition including India and Pakistan.Sepaktakraw is popular in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Myanmar and is now catching up in the United States and Canada. It is a game involving acrobatic skills played with a rattan ball on a court the size of a badminton court. The game is played mainly amongst the Malays in Sri Lanka but due to the efforts of the President of the Sri Lanka Sepaktakraw Association Nizam Hajireen it has caught up in various parts f the island specially in Nittambuwa.
