Polls Chief guides media on Presidential election

Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya this week requested all Media institutions to follow the guidelines he has laid down in respect of the presidential election to be held on January 8.

He said that, during the period of an election, the Media have a special responsibility to encourage the participation of the public in the democratic process, and to ensure that the presidential candidates have the opportunity to present their views on an equal basis.

The guidelines require Media institutions to be balanced and impartial in their dissemination of news relating to the poll, as well as give equal access to views of all the candidates.

There are 21 matters the Elections Commissioner has referred to in the guidelines, which have been issued to all Media institutions in the country.
