The GCE O/L 2014 which began on December 9 concluded last Thursday, 19.

A total of 578,135 candidates including 370,030 school candidates and 208,105 private candidates sat for the exam, said the Government Information Dept. The exam was conducted at 4,279 centres islandwide including in Nainativu (Nagadeepa), Analaitivu and Delft Island, supervised by a staff of 38,200.

Special exam centres were set up at the Magazine Prison in Colombo, Suneetha Vidyalaya in Watareka, Padukka for those in prison custody, and for children who need special care at the Ratmalana Deaf and Blind School, Matara Rohana Deaf and Blind School and Shivaraj Vidyalaya in Mahawewa.

The 2014 GCE Ordinary Level paper marking of 577,220 candidates will be conducted in two stages, with the first stage from December 28 to January 5, 2015, the Examinations Dept said.

Examinations Commissioner W.M.N.J. Pushpakumara said that a staff of 32,000 will be deployed for paper marking to be held in 107 centres at 83 schools island-wide.

The second stage will be from January 20 to January 28, in 13 schools.
