A combined bus and railway terminal is to be constructed in Hambantota town at a cost of US$ 16 million (Rs. 2 billion) by a Chinese company, the Government has decided. Construction of the project by the China Harbour Engineering Company would begin early next year and was expected to be completed in one and half years, Project Director R.M. Gamini said.

A 23-acre land close to the Convention centre had been allocated for the project.  The project director said the proposed expressway and the extended railway line would end at this terminal and the existing bus stand and the shopping complex shifted to this area.
