With the increasing demand for qualified teachers in Information Technology (IT) in government schools, the Education Ministry has initiated a plan to offer IT Degrees to teachers of the subject.

Education Ministry’s IT branch jointly with the University of Vocational Technology (UNIVOTEC) will conduct the Degree programmes for teachers of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in State schools.

BTech in ICT (Software Technology), BTech in ICT (Multimedia & Web Technology) and BTech in ICT (Network Technology) are the Degree programmes for teachers with the choice of doing it full time or part time.

The two categories of teachers eligible to apply for the Degrees are ICT Diplomates from the Teacher Training College, and have five years or more training in the subject, as well as teachers who have received appointments for a different subject, but who have been teaching ICT for five years or since its introduction in schools.

The first category will face two initial exams and those who obtain very high marks will be exempted from the first year, with only two more years to obtain the Degree. The other category will have to follow the three-year Degree programme.

Education Secretary Anura Dissanayake said applicants will have to bear the cost of the course, while the Ministry will provide paid study leave for full-time students.

Teachers desirous of following the Degree programmes, have to apply on the Education Ministry’s application forms available on its website www.education.gov.lk

Applications to be sent by post to: The Director, Information & Communication Technology Division, Education Ministry, Isurupaya, Battaramulla, on or before January 12, 2015.

The Ministry said strict disciplinary action will be taken against applicants furnishing false information.

ICT was first introduced in 2007 as a Technical subject to be offered at the GCE O/L, with the main objective of developing competencies to use ICT tools and build a basic theoretical base for students to pursue higher studies in ICT. (Nadia Fazlulhaq)
