The National Colleges of Education (Teacher Training Colleges) students’ Rs 2,500 monthly allowance will be increased to Rs 4,000 from January next year, said Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena.

He said this at a ceremony held at Siyane College of Education in Gampaha, to hand over hand tractors under the Divi Neguma programme, to 18 National Colleges of Education, to encourage model farming among students.

The Minister said those trained at Colleges of Education have more theoritical and practical knowledge in teaching and understanding students.

“It is unfair to limit their qualification to only a Diploma. Therefore, it was decided to extend the course by a year and convert this Diploma to a Degree,” he said.
