Anish Wijesinghe: an emerging junior player for Sri Lanka

Anish Wijesinghe was the only player to make it to the final among the Sri Lankan boys and girls participating in the recently concluded ITF Junior (Under 18) tournament (week 2) concluded at Colombo’s SLTA recently.

Anish, playing only in his second ITF tournament for the year, was the only unseeded player to advance to the finals of the tournament where he lost to Korean Sang Woo Bae 0-6, 6-4, 3-6 in a rain interrupted final that had to the stopped and restarted twice. Anish advanced to the finals of the ITF tournament by beating No 4 seed I. Patwardhan of India, No: 7 seed S. Daosaengsawang of Thailand (who was a finalist in the week 1 ITF tournament) and Arjun Ramakrishnan of India (6-2, 2-6,6-4).

Last year Anish was the under 16 national champion at the Tennis Nationals conducted by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association of Sri Lanka. In this year’s National Tournament, Anish retired injured, having advanced to the semi-final stage of the under 18 age group.
