On September 7, the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka performed a concert of music from the movies to a hall that was packed to capacity. Not one single seat of the Ladies’ College hall remained empty, and many who waited to get their tickets at the door had to turn back, disappointed.
It was one of those rare concerts where the audience was inspired to rise to its feet in appreciation of the music and the musicians. The concert-goers had such superlative reviews of the concert, that the SOSL has been inundated with requests for a repeat performance.

In response to the overwhelming demand, the SOSL will give a repeat performance of Music from the Movies on October 5 at the Ladies’ College Hall.

If you missed the first performance, you now have an opportunity to hear the SOSL play some of the best known themes from the most popular hits of the silver screen. In your mind’s eye, you might see Darth Vader stalk down the halls of the Death Star as you hear the brilliant strains the theme from Star Wars, or imagine “Bond, James Bond,” when the orchestra plays the theme from 007. The SOSL will perform a fabulous selection of music from hits like Pirates of the Caribbean, Gladiator, and Mission Impossible. It will also perform a medley from Chicago that will make you want to get up and do the Charleston, one from Sound of Music that will bring back so many memories of your favourite things and dare you to dance in the aisles for Dancing Queen and other perennially popular Abba tunes from the hugely successful Mamma Mia.

The orchestra will also treat you to the sweeping melodies of Richard Addinsell’s Warsaw performed by renowned pianist Ramya De Livera Perera. Music from the Movies is directed by Dushyanthi Perera, better known as a cellist, but who has recently taken up the baton with great success.

The SOSL will be joined by the Ladies’ College Choir, which will be enhanced by vocalists Thivanthi Perera, Amandhi Caldera, Shehara Liyanage and Roshani de Silva in the medleys from Sound of Music and Mamma Mia!

Amandhi Caldera will perform her sizzling rendition of the jazzy music of Chicago while Shehara Liyanage will sing the poignant On My Own from Les Mis.

Tickets are available at www.tickets.lk or at 113, 5th Lane, Colombo 07, Sarasavi Bookshop, Nugegoda or Abans Colpetty.
