Carlton Cup Basketball Championship from August 16
View(s):The sixth annual Carlton Cup Basketball Championship 2014, hosted by Hambantota Sports Club, will begin from August 16. According to the organisers, last year’s competition was a great success which brought overall basketball clubs and school teams together to battle it out for the Carlton Cup championship.
This year’s edition of the basketball championship is themed ‘For the Love of the Game’ to appreciate the men and women who have toiled hard to uplift the game. The competition will be held under nine different categories out of which the Men’s Division I Premier and Men’s Division I Regular segments will be the main crowd pullers.
The main segment for the ladies will be the Women’s Division I Championship. In addition the Men’s Division II Championship will be held for second tier sides. For veterans of the game, the Masters 5-a-side Championship will be allocated while competitions will be held under two different age categories for school boys and girls. The age groups will be Under-14 and the Under-19, which will be a 3×3 competition.
Last year HSC Blues beat Colombo Basketball Club 64-61 in a tensed final to win the Division ‘A’ title while Colombo ‘B’ beat Negombo Knights 66-63 in another closely contested final to win the Division ‘B’ title.
The inaugural Carlton Cup was held in 2009, a year after Hambantota Sports Club (HSC) Blues was formed. Currently HSC has three teams, the Blues, Blacks and the Melbourne Blues in Australia. Through their involvement the tournament has succeeded in bringing quality and professionalism to the game.
