The 48th Asian Body Building Championship 2014 came to a close on a high note for Sri Lanka at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium last Saturday ending the gold medal drought for Lankans in international sporting events for some time.

The three winners of 65kg event

Sri Lankan musclemen contesting in seven weight classes claimed four gold medals, three silver and two bronze medals finishing second behind Iran who won five golds, five silvers and two bronze medals. This is the highest tally achieved by Sri Lanka in this half-a-century old sport.

Over 250 competitors from 29 countries from the Middle East, South Asia, South East Asia, Far East including China and Japan took part in this mega event hosted by the Sri Lanka Body Building and Fitness Federation after three decades.

20 events worked off which included six women’s Body Fitness contests. Nine Sri Lankans took part in seven Men’s Body Building event finals and ended-up with seven competitors winning medals. For Sri Lanka Gold Medals were won by K.M.D.

Silva, Y.M. Amila, S.P. Siriwardena and K.N. Niranjankumara in the 50 kg, 60 kg, 65 kg and 70 kg weight class while B.A.S. Prasanna, Ranil Sampath Silva and Lucian Pushparaj winning Silver Medals in 55kg, 60 kg and 100kg class and Bronze Medals were won by D.M. Adikaram in 70kg and Dharshana Ranmudu in 70kg classes.

Sri Lankan Body Builders’ achievements in this edition of the Asian Body Building Championship will go down in the history of Sri Lanka as the team to win the highest number of Gold Medals.

At the all-important Mr. Asia Contest Iranian Khalid Asadi wascrowned the winner while fellow Iranian Reza Bagherzaden and Abdul Hadi Alkhayat of Kuwait ended as first runner-up and second runner-up respectively.

In the women’s Fitness events Kazakhstan swept the board with four Golds, two silver medals and a bronze. Chinese Taipei’s only medal – gold was won by Yi-ming Li in the Women’s Physique 49kg event.

President of the Asian Fitness and Body Building Federation H.E. Sheik Abdullah Al Khalif, President’s Assistant of the International Body Building Federation Dr. Adel Fahim and Dr. Rafael Santonja President of the International Body Building Federation graced the event on the invitation of SLBBFF and awarded the medals and gave away the prizes for the winners.
