An unbeaten 98 off 79 balls with 13 boundaries and five sixes by skipper Charana Nanayakkara and an unbeaten 52 off 108 balls by opener Kasun Abeyrathne helped Thurstan College put St Servatius College Matara out of the Under-17 Division I Tournament at the Uyanwatte stadium.

Thurstan qualified to play in the pre quarter-finals of the tournament.

St. Servatius deciding to bat first were bowled out for 209 runs in 49.4 overs. Ramesh Nimantha scored 52 runs and Prashan Kumara scored 24. Senal Wijesinghe captured three wickets while Isitha Wijesekera, Dilan Maduranga and Pandula Perera captured two wickets each.

Thurstan recovered from a precarious 88/5 in the 25th over to win the game with Charana and Kasun sharing an unbeaten 125 run partnership for the sixth wicket. Chamil Dhananjaya and Saviru Dhananjaya captured two wickets each.

St. Joseph’s College cruised to their second straight win in the second round of the All Island Under-17 Division I Tournament defeating Maliyadeva by 2 wickets at Kurunegala.

Earlier the Josephians defeated Bandaranayake MV Gampaha by seven wickets and now face Dharmarajah College in the last of their second round game this week.

Chasing a challenging 225 to win the visitors were in deep trouble at 155 for 6 before tail enders Thashan Perera (38n.o.), Avishka Fernando (26) and Malshan Rodrigo (27n.o.) carried them through with seven balls remaining.

The Josephians emerged group Champions in the first round defeating Dharmapala Pannipitiya by six wickets, Piliyandala Central by six wickets, Zahira by eight wickets, Royal by five wickets ,Thurstan by 27 runs, St. Sebastian’s by 71 runs and recording a no-decision against Carey. The Darley Road boys are coached by Janaka Deegodagamage.
