It was a poignant moment when the National Film, Television and Sound Archives was opened at the National Archives on Saturday, April 5, the event being held in honour of the 95th birthday of the doyen of Sinhala cinema, Dr. Lester James Peries amidst a gathering of stars of the silver screen and Government Ministers and officials. The film archives will be a repository of Sinhala film material, a long felt need and one that Dr. Peries, his film director wife Sumitra Peries and others in the industry have campaigned for.

The exhibition of the celebrated Director’s work – stills and newspaper cuttings of twenty films from his very first much acclaimed film “Rekawa”, also attracted much attention, at the Department of National Archives.
