Heavy rains and strong winds to continue for two more days

Heavy rains will continue for the next two to three days, Met. Department Director General S. H. Kariyawasam said.
He said most parts of the country would experience rain in the afternoons and nights with some areas experiencing heavy showers upto 100 mm.

“What we are experiencing are inter-monsoon rains with strong winds and thunder,” he said. Mr. Kariyawasam urged the people to take precautions during thunder showers accompanied by lightning. He said electric equipment, especially television sets should switched off during lightning.

He also warned of strong winds along the coastal areas and urged fishermen to desist from going to sea. “There is a slight disturbance in the weather pattern. People should be aware of strong winds these days,” he said. There would be strong winds in the southern and south eastern seas for the next two days with the speed of the wind reaching upto 80 kmph, the Met Department warned.

It said intermittent showers or thundershowers would occur over the deep and shallow sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Matara.  Meanwhile, the Sunday Times learns that due to heavy winds some fishermen in the Chilaw-Puttalam areas have kept away from sea.

Due to heavy rains, a main bridge along the Padiyathalawa-Bible road was damaged and the people have been advised to take alternative routes.
