Heavy rains to continue for the next two to three days, Met. Department Director General S. H. Kariyawasam said. He said that the rain will be most prevalent during the afternoons and nights while most parts of the island would be affected. In some areas rainfalls of about 100 mm. can be expected.

“This is the inter-monsoon rains. It is mostly associated with localised strong winds and thunder,” he explained. Mr. Kariyawasam said that since the thunder showers have a potential risk people should take precautions during this period. He said that equipment operated with electricity, especially television sets should be kept switched off.

“We can see that there is a slight disturbance in the weather pattern. People should be aware of strong winds these days,” he said adding that those who are going to sea must be cautious. He explained that there will be strong winds in the southern and south eastern seas for a couple of days. The winds are most likely to travel at a speed of 30-40 km per hour and could even increase to 60 km per hour.
