The Southern Provincial Council (SPC) is planning to develop the province in many areas including tourism, with a number of new projects earmarked to make the areas more attractive to tourists. One of these will be a project centering on the picturesque area of Deniyaya where a tourist zone is to be set up by 2014.

The SPC will also undertake the training of tourist guides. The other area on which the SPC will focus is the fisheries industry with a programme to release fish fingerlings to the reservoirs to enhance inland fish production. Equipment for the fishing community such as boats, nets and safety gear are also distributed

In addition rural industries programmes are to be promoted in 2014 to create a sustainable, productive and internationally accepted community of entrepreneurs. In such a programme an automatic yarn pigmentation unit was launched in Kurunduwatte, Galle in 2013.

In a scheme to improve the handloom industry which the province is also famous for, it is planned to set up three handloom villages at district level in Galle, Matara and Hambantota. New craftsmen will also be trained.

Its most interesting scheme yet would be the development of social welfare services in the area. Special attention is focused on creating a right environment in the Province for senior citizens. This also involves self-employment training courses for elders, persons with special needs, orphans and widows.

To protect child rights an environment will be created for the protection and care of children institutionalised in Government-run children’s homes as well as for conducting vocational training courses for their benefit.

Measures are to be taken to organise recreational activities as well as educational programmes designed to ensure the children’s mental wellbeing.
