Southern UNPers want Sajith as chief ministerial candidate

The United National Party’s Matara District organisations unanimously resolved yesterday to ask the leadership to nominate former Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa as Chief Ministerial candidate when polls are held for the Southern Provincial Council (SPC).

The decision came at a meeting chaired by UNP Matara District MP and communications chief Mangala Samaraweera.
The proposal was made by SPC Opposition Leader Siri Wijewickrema and seconded by H.R. Wimalasiri.

Mr. Wijewickrema said Mr. Premadasa would be able to cause a dent in the UPFA support base in the Southern Province. An entry into provincial politics by Mr. Premadasa would be similar to how Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga contested the Western Provincial Council elections and became the chief minister in 1993 before contesting and winning the parliamentary and presidential elections the next year.

A notable absentee at yesterday’s meeting was Matara District UNP MP Buddhika Pathirana. All party organisers, district and electorate leaders including Sagala Ratnayake took part in the meeting.
