Forty one Indian fishermen who were apprehended by the Sri Lanka Navy in June and July, were released on the instructions of the Attorney General (AG), by Mannar Magistrate Aanththi Kanakaratnam. They were released while their trial was ongoing for poaching in Sri Lanka’s territorial waters. The men had not pleaded guilty, but the AG’s Dept had advised they be released.

A further inquiry has been fixed for December, to decide if the released fishermen’s 10 trawlers can be released or confiscated, said Attorney Dharmarajah Vinodhan, who was retained by the Indian Consul General in Jaffna, to look into the interests of the captured fishermen.
