Mahanama Colombo began the school cricket season on a winning note when they recorded a crushing ten wicket win over fancied St. Anthony’s Katugastota in their Under-19 inter-school cricket encounter concluded at the FTZ ground in Katunayake yesterday.
It was the spinners who guided Mahanama to victory with the right and left arm spin combination of Dulanjana Seneviratne and Dinuka Karunananda who, together shared eight wickets between them in the first innings and later right-arm spinner Gihan Sanjeewa doing the finishing touches along with Karunananda.

The opening day’s play saw Seneviratne who ended with impressive figures of 5 for 15 and Karunananda who supported with figures of 3 for 12 running through the Antonian batting to bundle them out for a paltry score of 60 and Mahanama ending the day on 91 for 3.
Mahanama resuming from their overnight score lost their remaining seven wickets for the addition of 62 runs to end the innings at 153. Right arm off-spinner Nimesha Gunasinghe ended with top figures of 4 for 25 for the Antonians.
St. Anthony’s batting the second time with a deficit of 93 runs again lost wickets at regular intervals as they found spinner Sanjeewa too hot to handle.

Despite a fighting of 67 coming from Mohamed Aflaar the others failed to make any impression as Sanjeewa who ended with match winning figures of 6 for 22 and another three-wicket haul by Karunananda saw them being bowled out for 115
Mahanama chasing 22 runs for victory with plenty of time left was not in a hurry as they reached the target in 7.2 overs.
At Maradana, Zahira after being badly placed on 124 for 7 thanks to a knock of 64 by Tuan Safran recovered to end their innings with a respectable score of 189 against President’s College Rajagiriya in the match which began yesterday.
