The University of Adelaide is proving to be an increasingly popular study choice for Sri Lankan students. In the last 12 months, the number of Sri Lankan students choosing to study in Adelaide has increased by 30%. This increase can be attributed to the high quality of education on offer in this vibrant and multi-cultural Australian city.

The University of Adelaide has a global reputation for excellence in teaching, learning and research. It is ranked in the top 1% of universities worldwide, associated with five Nobel Prize winners and has produced 106 Rhodes Scholars and 116 Fulbright Scholars. It is also a member of the prestigious Group of Eight—Australia’s leading research-intensive universities.

Known as the ‘International Education City’, Adelaide is the most affordable and liveable of all Australian cities. In the Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2012 Liveability survey, Adelaide was ranked the fifth most liveable city in the world.

With great shopping and beaches, a café culture and affordable student accommodation, Adelaide offers a relaxed and vibrant lifestyle that suits student living. The city also plays host to a variety of sporting events including national and international cricket matches at the world famous Adelaide Oval.

Thamara Senarathne who recently completed her Master of Applied Economics at the University of Adelaide is not surprised that more and more Sri Lankan students are choosing to study at the University of Adelaide. She tells us“Adelaide’s calm and relaxed environment is perfect for study, while the relatively low cost of living means your money goes further.”

Harshani Rajakaruna who is currently in Adelaide studying a Master of Finance & Business Economics chose to study at the University of Adelaide due to its family friendly lifestyle. “It is a very green city with beautiful beachesand lots of fresh air. My family really enjoy the lifestyle here”. Harshani also talks about the great support she has received from Australian students, “Generally, Australian studentshave more technical knowledge. If I ever have a problem I ask them and they are always happy to help me out”.

Dakshitha Narendarais studying for a Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Systems) at the University. He chose the University of Adelaide because of its prestigious reputation and its practical and well-structured course. He explains, “The University offers a stimulating environment where students are encouraged to participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities.”He goes on to say “The campus is so multi-cultural. As well as making friends with other Sri Lankan students through the Sri Lankan Students Association, I have also made great friends with international students fromall over the world.”Dakshitha believes thatthe support on offer for International students at the University of Adelaide is exceptional and makes it very easy for students to settle into Australian life.
