A quality learning experience at CFPS Law School

“The 22 years of excellence at CFPS and the prestige and recognition of the University of London will no doubt make an excellent combination in delivering to students a quality higher education” said Dr. Sunil Jayantha Navaratne, Secretary Ministry of Higher Education, at the recent Open Day and Scholarship Award Ceremony of the CFPS Law School for its LL.B. and Diploma in Laws Programmes with the University of London.

Dr. Navaratne was speaking at the event held at the Kingsbury attended by several hundred students, scholarship award winners and parents, where he was the Chief Guest. The event was also attended by several senior officials of the University of London including Professor Jenny Hamilton, Head of Undergraduate Laws.

The University of London is one of the United Kingdom’s world class Universities and several of its Colleges including the King’s College, the University College of London and the London School of Economics are ranked among the top Universities in that country for Law.

Speaking at the event Dr. Navaratne noted that institutions such as CFPS Law School are instrumental in delivering a quality higher education to students who wish to study for an internationally recognised degree in Sri Lanka.

Professor Hamilton in her speech observed that the CFPS Law School was a Registered Centre of the internationally acclaimed University. She stated that the alumni of the University included the former Vice President of the International Court of Justice Dr. C.G. Weeramanthry.

She observed that the CFPS had demonstrated a high standard of support for students in preparing for their examinations in Laws of the University of London.
Professor Hamilton told the gathering that among the students of the University of London was Chathuni Kaneesha Uduwela, who has presently completed her Second Year examination and was awarded a scholarship by CfPS Law School to cover the cost of both the University of London fees for the LLB and also CfPS fees for local tuition.

An important event of the ceremony was the awarding of the 2013 Sir Ivor Jennings Memorial Scholarship award to the Dulaj Dhananjaya Sellahewa an old boy of Ananda College, who had obtained straight As at both O/Levels and A/Levels and was also an accomplished weight and power lifter.

Saliya Pieris, Attorney-at-Law and Chairman of CFPS Law School told the gathering that the Scholarship was awarded after a competitive examination followed by an interview after which the winner was selected. Apart from the Sir Ivor Jennings Scholarship several other students were awarded scholarships covering the entirety or part of the tuition fees in Sri Lanka.
Mr.Pieris outlined the range of activities at the CFPS Law School including mooting and debating as well as a series of guest lectures conducted by several well-known personalities.

The CFPS Law School had also commenced an internship programme where its second and third year students were placed in the chambers and offices of several President’s Counsel and Senior Attorneys-at-Law, to enable them to gain a hands on experience in legal work.

Students also visit Parliament and the Courts which enable them to understand the legislative and legal process at first hand.
The event also saw the launch of the CFPS Course Web, a first for a legal educational institution in Sri Lanka which will enable CFPS Law School students to use the web to enhance their legal studies.

The CFPS Law School is situated at a central location at No 151, Dharmapala Mawatha, Colombo 7.
