NP National Physical Planning Committee to start development planning

Maankulam will be the administrative centre of the Northern Province, while Jaffna will be the cultural hub, with Kilinochchi as the trade hub and Mannar as the port city, according to the National Physical Planning Committee of the Northern Province, which will commence its development planning in the Province.

This was revealed at the Committee’s inaugural meeting held on Friday (16) at the Urban Development Ministry headquarters in Battaramulla, with Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa as the Chief Guest. The task of the 46-member Committee headed by the Northern Province’s Chief Secretary will be to prepare development plans for the province.

Discussions on Friday included the development of highways, health and education, agriculture, irrigation and basic infrastructure facilities. It was decided at the Committee meeting to continue with development activities that safeguard the cultural and social lifestyles and places.

The Committee will also appoint sub-committees from among public representatives of the relevant areas for their views.
Among the other dignitaries were Northern Province Governor Maj. Gen. G.L. Chandrasiri, Housing Ministry Secretary P.H.L. Wimalasiri, National Physical Planning Dept Director General J.M.L. Jayasekare and Committee Chairman and Northern Provincial Council Secretary R. Wijeyalakshmi.
