The funeral of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ernest Perera takes place at the General Cemetery in Borella (Roman Catholic Section) at 4.00 pm today. He passed away on Friday. He was 81. He entered the Police Dept as a graduate Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in 1957.

The following year he was posted to the Galle Division. In 1960, he was promoted Superintendent of Police (SP) and placed in charge of the Gampaha Division.

In 1977, he was promoted Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Colombo Range, and later appointed as the country’s 23rd IGP in 1988, until his retirement in 1993.A year after retirement, he was appointed as the country’s High Commissioner to Malaysia.

A past pupil of St. Joseph’s College, Colombo 10, he later graduated at the University of Peradeniya.Service takes place at his residence, 389/4, Hokandara Road, Thalawathugoda, at 2.00 pm today, and thereafter cortege leaves for burial to Borella Kanatte (Roman Catholic Section) at 4.00 pm.
