The UGC is also to provide loans to graduates who wish to start their own businesses after completing their higher education. Prof Hirimburegama said that the project is called the ‘Business Sells’.

“In this project, the interested student present his/her business proposal to the relevant officials of Business Sells, who will forward them to an academic, who will help them develop the idea into a business,” she said. This loan, at 3% interest, is for a year’s duration.

“We have very talented students, but unfortunately, they don’t have the means to develop. We will provide this, and the academic who works with them, will guide and provide necessary information. In this way, students will not have to wait rely on the State to provide them with employment,” she said. Prof Hirimburegama explained that, in other countries including India and Korea, this method is used to help graduates build their own means of income. She said that the UGC hopes to allocate funds for this project next year. “With the positive feedback we have received from the public, we can develop the country,” she said.
