Rain spoils U19 boys’ hockey final

Rain played havoc with the final of the boys’ Under 19 Schools Hockey Nationals between Matale Golds and Colombo Reds, conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Association when the game had to be called off 15 minutes into the second session with neither side having scored.

As a result both teams were declared joint champions.

In the first semifinal, D.L. Bandara (three goals) and T.B.M. Peiris (one goal) gave Matale ‘Golds’ a 4 -2 win. For the losers, Dananjana Lakshan and Thilina Welagedara scored one goal each.

In the second semifinal, Colombo Reds beat Kandy Blues 3-1.

In the girls’ segment too both the Colombo Reds and Matale were declared joint champions after the game ended in a nil-all draw.

In the first semifinal, Matale defeated Kandy Whites with both goals off the stick of S.S. Ratnasiri. While the second semifinal was won by Colombo Reds, who beat Kandy Blues 2-1.

While Gayathri Mayadunne and Lasitha Prabani scored for Colombo Reds, D. Weerasinghe netted for the Kandy Blues.

In the playoff for the third place, Kandy Blues beat Kandy Whites 2-0. (BM)
