This makes it extremely important to lay the groundwork to nurture and develop a strong design industry in Sri Lanka too. Facilitating this important change is now being driven by Sri Lanka’s creative nucleus, AOD International Design Campus which is the South Asian hub for a decade’s worth of work in the region spanning fromMaldives to the region. “From the advertising industry, the interior architecture industry to the billion dollar fashion/apparel industry demand for the top designers from AOD”saidPrincipal MacLeod. “We have set the standards insalaries and remuneration levels for our designers,as talent and international standard design education can draw top dollar salaries intoday’s world”added McLeod.

AOD is renowned for providing internationally acclaimed fashion and design degrees from Northumbria University UK, to Sri Lankan youth. Not stopping at this, AOD is now stepping into national and international schools to nurture and develop the inherent creative talents of the school students. Supporting the recently concluded Interact Cultural Festival (organised by the D.S. Senanayake College), AOD supported the event with a view toeducate a group of over 100 school youth leaders on the important correlation between culture and design, the importance of a correct and inspiring design industry in Sri Lanka, and how it can drive the evolution of Sri Lankan culture.

One student leader commented “I’d like to pursue a career in Interior Design given the increasing tourism hotels coming up in the country as well as the need for specialized office space,” which in fact, is a degree offered by AOD and has is reputed for producing some of the best young interior designers in the country.

“By starting to engage these youth leaders in ‘design’ from a young age, we hope to present to them, the career opportunities open to them in Sri Lanka and across the world”said Karen McLeod. This includes lucrative careers in interior architecture, apparel and fashion, design management, advertising and graphic design, fashion marketing as well as film and animation. Linda Speldewinde founder of AOD and active supporter of design led entrepreneurship, said that AOD is fully supported in its endeavors by industry, by the Sri Lankan government, and the wider local and international design educators and industries, to create a powerful, well-educated generation of designers who will not only support the local design industry, but also bring in global revenue through the growing demand for internationally trained designers for employment abroad. “AOD promises a wholesome design future for Sri Lanka. Our three-fold promise includes nurturing creative talent, harnessing design skills in line with global standards at our university and opening world opportunities in design as a regional design hub as a design led future arrives,” concluded Speldewinde.
